Common Questions About Family Photography Sessions

Location, Location, Location…

The first decision to make with any Family photoshoot is indoors or outdoors?

Indoor family photography sessions

My indoor sessions take place in the comfort of your own home, meaning that you are surrounded by everything that represents you and your family and the weather does not matter.

Outdoor family photography sessions

The outdoor sessions however mean we have the space and freedom to try new things and children often enjoy being able to run around or play “pooh sticks” under the bridge etc.

If you decide that an outdoor session is the right choice for you and your family, we will work together to find the right location for the shoot. Places that I’ve carried out family sessions before include; Sandhurst Memorial Park, Alice Holt Forest, Swinley Forest at The Lookout, and Ambarrow / Bluebell Woods.

What should I wear for my family photo shoot?

So you’ve decided on WHERE to have your session, but what should you WEAR?

The time of year of your session will play a big part in what you wear, however below are some guidelines of what to / not to wear:

Avoid small patterns as these do not tend to photograph well (e.g. small floral print / check shirts)

Avoid having family members in colours at either end of the spectrum i.e. some in black / navy and others in white, as you want everyone to look like they belong together in the final images

Speak to your other family members to see what colours they are planning to wear so that you do not clash in bright pinks and reds

If your session is outdoors, ensure that you have comfortable footwear as some walking will be involved

What to expect on the day of your session?

On the day of your session we will aim to cycle through all combinations of family members and solo shots to give you the biggest variety of images at the end. However I will ask you to let me know which shots you would like to prioritise should we run out of time for whatever reason. For example you may be more concerned about having one really nice group photograph or perhaps you’d like more of a focus on the children.

We will have a fun and relaxed session to capture a mixture of posed and candid images of you and your family.

If you have any special requests or certain images you’d like to try and recreate, I will do my best to ensure we do this, but please let me know at the time of booking so I can plan accordingly.

What happens after your session?

Your full set of final, digital images will be delivered to you on a USB stick within 3-4 weeks of your session date.

However I know that 3-4 weeks is a long time to wait so I like to send my families a “sneak peek” image within 48 hours of your session. This will be sent in both high and low resolution meaning that you are able to share the image on social media and get it printed should you wish.

Once you have received your USB stick with all of your final images, you will then be able to select which image you would like as your free 8 x 10 print. This will usually be received within 1 week of you notifying me which image you’d like.

Other FAQs

Can our dog be involved in the session?

Of course. My family sessions are about the WHOLE family, so if you want your dog to be involved simply let me know when you book your session. Of course the number of images you receive including your furry family member will depend on how co-operative they are on the day.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of your outdoor Family Session?

I will keep a close eye on the forecast in the week leading up to your Family Session and if it looks like it will be too bad for the session to go ahead I will get in touch with you to arrange another date.

What happens if a family member is ill on the date of the session?

No one can help being poorly, so simply get in touch with me ASAP to let me know and we can arrange another date.
